GAIA & GIBADA
- Reycled Plastic Stools-
Gaia (Earth) and Gibada (Moon), stools made from beechwood and recycled HDPE, are made to enhance our living space in a simple and ecological manner. Its design aims to promote and reinforce the notion that recycled thermoplastics can become a beautiful and creative material when applied into furniture.
The stools where designed and built by me, Gaia was made 100% by hand, contrary to Gibada. Gibada was made by hand except for the last stage of the seat geometry, which was shaped by a CNC router.

GAIA (EARTH)
Its design allows it to be used either as a stool or side table, and when no longer useful, it can be easily disassembled and recycled again.
Since recycled plastic was going to be the main topic of this project I allowed the material itself be the one in charge of the design. Through experimentation and testing, patterns, forms and shapes where discovered and analyzed little by little, a lot of prototypes where made to fully understand the capabilities and characteristics of recycled plastics. There was little control on the final color patterns of the stools.
MODULAR
Gaia becomes the center piece and thanks to the modular geometry of Gibada; in addition, one or more Gibada units, can be added to create different forms or applications according to need.
I’m a designer deeply worried about our plastic waste problem, I feel that plastic is such a great material but has a bad reputation given its characteristics of not being eco-friendly. Plastic is sometimes viewed as a material used for cheap or low-quality products, it was in my deepest desired to change this pre-stablished mentality. I wanted to create something elegant yet so simple that the material itself would be the main attraction. People would immediately doubt the origin of the material, this way, recycled plastic could make a different impression on people.
